Club of the year 2024 - Caroline Street Social Club

Caroline Street Social Club

A member's club opened in 1966 and located within the Saltaire conservation area but just outside the eastern boundary of the World Heritage Site.

CAMRA members are welcome on display of a current CAMRA membership card.

It is a valuable community resource providing home to an eclectic mix of people with interests ranging from dancing, acting, play writing, bingo, live music & the arts.

A large lounge containing the bar and a games room to the rear is located to the right of the entrance. The club hosts live folk, roots and acoustic music, and other acts, (especially on a Friday) in "The Live Room" to the rear of the building and open to all. There are bingo nights in the main lounge from 7.30pm on Tuesdays and Fridays. A rock and roll tea dance takes place on the afternoon of the 3rd Sunday of the month.

The club can be hired for events and functions outside of its normal opening times. During lockdown a beer garden was added to the rear of the property and occasional outside music events are held

Cider Pub of the Year 2024 - Jacobs Well

CAMRA Yorkshire Cider Pub of the Year 2022 and CAMRA Bradford Branch Pub of the Year 2023 - Runner Up (Central Bradford).

Refurbished and re-opened in May 2013, this pub was formerly known as Jacobs Beer House and Jacobs Ale & Cider House. This is the only building, dating from 1811, on what is left of Kent Street. It comprises a single open-plan room but with a rustic, multi-room feel.

Six hand-pulls offer three regular real ales and up to three guests of varying range and style. Three hand-pulls are used for dispensing real cider, often from Grumpy John and other local producers. There are also numerous boxed ciders and perries.

Eight keg taps offer a range of European beers and a cider. Selection of pies available throughout the day and include some interesting fillings.

The outdoor seating area in front of the pub is popular in good weather. Sit outside and watch the city bustle while supping good ale.

An Irish traditional music session is held on the afternoon of the second and fourth Sunday of each month.

Central Bradford Pub of the Year 2024

Winner - The Corn Dolly

The Corn Dolly

Multi-award winning traditional freehouse that has featured in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for more than 30 years and run by the same family since 1989.

A short distance from the city centre and within easy reach from Forster Square railway station. It used to be called the Wharfe due to its location near to the former Bradford canal and opened its doors for the first time in 1834.

It retains the friendly atmosphere of an out-of-town local.

An open-plan layout incorporates a games area to one end.

There are three regular real ales plus a further five guests, usually from regional breweries and always including a varying dark ale. The eleven keg taps serve additional beers and ciders.

Good value food served on Thursday and Friday lunchtimes. It is popular for a pint before Bradford City matches.

A collection of over 1000 pump-clips adorn the beams.

Closing times on a Friday and Saturday may be earlier depending upon the demand on the night.

Runner up - Exchange Craft Beer House

Exchange Craft Beer House

This establishment is located under the Victorian splendour that is the Wool Exchange building. It was re-opened in mid-November 2018 by the owner of Hebden Bridge's Nightjar brewery as a real and craft ale beerhouse. Inside, the premises are open-plan with a large seating area and bar under a brick barrel ceiling with a smaller raised seating area near the entrance.

Despite being a cellar bar, the pub has a light and airy feel. In good weather, a small outdoor seating area is available to the rear.

Although the pub is not a tap house for Nightjar brewery, at least one of their real ales is usually available on the six hand-pulls (now 7). The other real ales tend to be sourced from smaller local and regional breweries but can be from further afield and aimed to provide a good variety of beer styles from light to dark.

There are ten keg taps which serve one cider plus a range of craft beers and lagers. Boxed cider is also available. A jazz night is held on the third Thursday of the month.

A "Magical Express Yourself" events takes place on the last Sunday each month and there is a craft club every Thursday evening.

A bookshelf is provided so people can read on the premises or take books away and replace for others to read.

Pies from Pieminister are available late afternoon to early evening, Wed-Sat.

Runner Up - The Fighting Cock

The Fighting Cock

Drinkers' paradise in an industrial area, this multi-award winning, traditionally-styled freehouse has featured in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for more than 30 years.

Twenty minutes walk from city centre and close to the bus routes along Thornton Road and Legrams Lane.

Its traditional, unpretentious feel appeals to a wide variety of people from loyal locals to well-travelled real ale enthusiasts.

Eight real ales are usually on sale including at least one dark beer. Ciders are offered and there may also be a perry. Eight keg taps offer a range of beers, European lagers, Guinness and a mass-produced cider. Foreign bottled beers are also stocked.

Good value lunches are served Monday to Saturday. The juke box has an extensive and eclectic choice of music.

A large pub garden is located on the opposite side of the street.

Outer Bradford Pub of the Year 2024

Winner - Cracker Barrel, Greengates

The Cracker Barrel

Opened in April 2017 and extensively refurbished in 2020, this small, friendly, popular, family-run micropub comprises a single room with the bar positioned along the right-hand side.

It has a cosy, homely feel.

Tetley Cask Bitter is the regular real ale. The other four hand-pulls serve an ever varying range of real ales, often including a dark beer, from regional breweries and sometimes further afield. Lagers, ciders and Guinness are available from the six keg taps.

The pub is family and dog friendly. The small outside seating area to the front of the pub is next to a busy main road so expect plenty of noise! A secluded beer garden to the rear adds additional seating in a quieter location.

Runner Up - Crafty Kernel, Shipley

The Crafty Kernel

Located on the former Cellar Trust shop close to the Market Square and bus interchange, this pub was opened in March 2022. It comprises an open-plan ground floor room containing the bar, with further seating in an upstairs room. It has a modern, clean feel.

The bar has four hand-pulls serving a varying range and styles of real ale usually from regional brewers. A variety of craft beers, lagers and a cider are also offered from the eight keg taps. Gluten-free beers are offered including at least one of the real ales. Real ciders are available and there is an extensive wine selection.

The upstairs room has potential for small functions and meetings.

A general knowledge quiz, run in a bingo style to be fair to all, takes place on a Thursday evening. There is often live music late afternoon / early evenings on a Sunday.

Deli-style food is available Friday to Sunday (except during the colder, winter months when it may not be available).

Runner Up - Peacock Bar, Bingley

The Peacock Bingley

The sister pub to the Peacock Bar on North Parade, Bradford, this establishment opened in November 2019. A modern basement pub, located opposite the railway station, comprising a small bar area and an adjacent larger room downstairs.

Up to five real ales are offered, usually from local and regional breweries. One pump is dedicated to dark beers and another is often used for those with a higher abv. From Jan 2024, some real ales are served from wooden casks. There are two rotating "craft keg" beers on tap. Four lagers, a wheat beer and a couple of ciders are also offered from keg.

A fridge adjacent to the bar has an extensive range of bottled and canned craft beers from the UK, Germany, Belgium and elsewhere.

Indian-style street food is offered and very popular with customers. On Monday nights, the food is 'Chinese tapas'.
